Rain Barrels to Provide Irrigation

Explorer Academy using rain barrels for high tunnel irrigation
Posted on 05/04/2018

Explorer Academy was recently awarded a $1,500 grant from West Virginia American Water to provide the school’s high tunnel with rain barrels.

The grant will provide an opportunity for students to continue their study of how vegetables grow, where seeds come from, seasonal crops, and when to harvest different crops.  They will also gain knowledge of the process of growing a garden from seed to table.

The school has partnered with Leslie Lehman, 4-H Mentoring, and Mark Buchanan, Environmental Specialist at Marshall University.  As part of a recent expedition, Buchanan spoke to the fourth grade classes about collecting rain water and how to make a rain barrel system for their garden.

For more information, please contact Ryan McKenzie, Principal, by calling the school at (304) 528-5126.
